Από το τελευταίο σας full length album, έχουν περάσει 2 χρόνια μέσα στα οποία ηχογραφήσατε κάποια singles, ένα compilation αλλά κι ένα split με τους Date Rate. Γιατί αποφασίσατε να ΄σπρώξετε’ όλη τη δημιοργικότητά σας εκεί και δεν μας προσφέρατε ακόμα ένα full length αριστούργημα;
Κρίνοντας από τις αντιδράσεις του κόσμου για το κομμάτι “Here Come The Robots” είμαστε στο σωστό δρόμο.
Στις 19 του Ιουνίου επισκέπτεστε την Ελλάδα για μία μίνι περιοδεία. 3 shows σε 3 ημέρες. Είστε έτοιμοι για το ελληνικό κοινό;
Καθώς δεν είχαμε τη δυνατότητα να σας δούμε από κοντά στο παρελθόν, μπορείτε να μας περιγράψετε ένα show των Stoned Jesus;
Εκτός από εσάς και τους Ethereal Riffian υπάρχουν άλλες μπάντες στην Ουκρανία στο δικό σας είδος;
Zeppelin, Sabbath, Hawkwind, Electric Wizard και Sleep/Om ειδικά τον πρώτο καιρό; κυρίως Mastodon, Drive Like Jehu, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam και Swans για την τρέχουσα περίοδο. Όσο για το τελευταίο μας album ήταν πολύ επηρεασμένο από Tool (“Lateralus”), Joy Division (“Unknown Pleasures”), Alice in Chains (“Dirt”), Van Der Graaf Generator’ (“Godbluff”) και Quest For Fire (ομώνυμο ντεμπούτο).
Πότε θα έχουμε νέο υλικό από τους Stoned Jesus;

ENGLISH VERSION
Welcome to Rockin’Athens.gr! Before we start I would like you to tell us how the political situation in your country, Ukraine, has affected you as persons and as a band as well.
Hi Rockin’ Athens! It struck us hard, on every level, from the fact that we’ve been personally involved into Maidan-related events to the Donbass situation – my parents live there, in the area where Russia’s waging the war on locals, trying to turn these lands into some kind of a buffering zone with ever-going conflicts. And of course it influenced our musical activity, from postponing the scheduled recording sessions (that’s why we’re still in the middle of the process) to writing the song dedicated to all of this. It’s called “YFS”, which stands for “youth for sale”, and it’s been premiered live on our recent European Spring tour. We’re hoping all the bloodshed to end soon, but it will always be dangerous now, ‘coz one little guy decided to become a new Hitler apparently.
Tell us a little bit about how you decided to form Stoned Jesus.
At first StJ was a one-man-project, just my home post-metal/sludge demos, but then it took turn to stoner/psychedelic side of things. The more we played the more we matured and experimented, so now we’re into our prog-rock phase I guess, ha!
How did you get your band name? Undoubtedly it’s a provocative name but also unique!
Unfortunately this question isn’t, ha-ha! Sorry but seriously, I feel like I’d been responding at least half-hundred times to “why-r-u-called-Stoned-Jesus” phrase. It was just a pun, toying with obvious genre’s clichés, and the initial moniker was “Stoned Jesus From The Outer Space”. But I got it shortened almost at once, feeling it could grow into a real thing. And hell it did!
Since your latest full-length ‘Seven Thunders Roar’ almost 2 years have passed, in the meantime you have released two singles, a compilation and one split with Date Rate. Why did you choose to spend your creativity there and not on giving the humanity another full-length masterpiece?
Oh cruel you! I won’t be pleading for mercy by bringing in focus the fact that we all got daytime jobs and other commitments, but please take into account that our former drummer left us only 16 months ago. We had to find a new guy (Viktor he is, and he’s great!), learn old songs, create new songs, and bear in mind that a Stoned Jesus song is not your usual two-riffed stoner doom dirge – we’re in our prog-rock phase right now, I’d stress again! Then we uploaded a handful of rehearsal jams as “The Seeds vol.I” on our bandcamp to raise some funds for the recording sessions, ‘coz studio work costs hella money when you wanna have the best result. Judging from the reaction on “Here Come the Robots” track we’re doing everything right! So it’s not like we decided to release old crap instead of making new music, it’s just the process that takes time. Have a little more patience and you’ll embrace the #StJesusThirdLP grace soon!
On the 19th of June you are visiting Greece for a mini tour!3 shows in 3 days. Are you prepared for the Greek audience?
Man, I don’t really know. We heard you Greeks are crazy, but we played for Ukrainian, Polish and Russian people, and believe me they’re insane! So let’s see if YOU are prepared, ha!
As we didn’t have the opportunity to see Stoned Jesus in the past, can you describe us a Stoned Jesus live show?
It’s fabulous, it’s spectacular. We have this flying stage and strippers and gay male dancers in boa and the guy with the tambourine and five trombone players and the fireshow in the middle of “Red Wine”’s 20-minute long triangle solo. I guess you could check us on YouTube to make sure I’m telling the truth right now.
Besides Stoned Jesus and Ethereal Riffian are there any other bands in Ukraine related to this music genre?
What’s the deal with the genres? Music is either good or bad, so the good bands are Krobak, 5R6, Bomg, Burrow, Somali Yacht Club, Wolverine Blues, Backchat, Cold Comfort, Maloi, etc. I wish they all would be a little more active, so you’d know them not only from my words, you know.
Name some artists and albums from any music genre that made Stoned Jesus what they are today!
Zeppelin, Sabbath, Hawkwind, Electric Wizard and Sleep/Om for the early days of course; mostly Mastodon, Drive Like Jehu, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam and Swans for the current period. I’m totally into Deftones, Mark Kozelek and Young Widows right now, if you ask. And I’m pretty sure I remember the albums that influenced “Seven Thunders Roar” a lot: Tool’s “Lateralus”, Joy Division’s “Unknown Pleasures”, Alice in Chains’ “Dirt”, Van Der Graaf Generator’s “Godbluff” and Quest For Fire’s self-titled debut.
When are you planning to have new Stoned Jesus material?
Well, it should have been early 2014, then late 2014, and we STILL got high hopes it will be 2014, but there are always some factors you’d never have thought about. But be sure we’ll release a solid 50-min long record, #StJesusThirdLP as we call it for now.
That’s all from me boys, thanks a lot for this interview! Last comments belong to you!
Thanks a lot for having us! Looking forward to blast off in Greece next weekend! Love, Igor and StJ
